Car Navigation Map Media

So you have a GPS Device and you want to extend its map inventory. What are the options?

Most in-dash Vehicle GPS systems typically come with DVD’s containing local maps, with these preloaded into the unit.

Others may have the DVD discs as part of the package, requiring you to load them.

Less expensive units may require you to purchase the map DVD’s separately. DVD media containing detailed maps of the entire United States are typically priced in the $300 range.

Either way you need to find out:

  1. Whether the maps are for the local country
  2. If the maps are detailed street-level maps
  3. How maps are updated, and any cost associated with this – many require an annual update subscription.
  4. Whether there is sufficient hardrive storage onboard the unit to store the maps - PDA/GPS units and entry-level nav systems typically require media cards for map storage.
  5. Is the GPS function maintained when outside the map region - Top-of-the-line portable models usually provide comprehensive street-level maps on a hard drive, meaning you don’t lose coverage when you travel outside of a map region.

Size of Storage Required

A typical map region uses around 200 – 250 MB of storage. Additional maps may be held on additional SD cards, and preloaded before travel. It is a simple task to change SD cards for different regions, but can be expensive if you need USA wide coverage at your fingertips.

Typcial PDA Map Storage

Mio 136, a PDA/GPS device is designed for use in a car and on foot. This unit does not have preloaded maps. Instead it uses a combination of 32MB of internal memory and 256MB SD [Secure Digital] card to hold detailed map regions.

The least expensive units come loaded with base maps of the United States. These include major interstate roadways and highways. This is generally sufficient for long range trips. Local areas can then be added for detail street coverage.

PC Mapping Software

Mapping software such as Destinator 5 allows you to choose predetermined regional maps and transfer them from your PC to your GPS device.

Loading maps onto your GPS unit is usually done by:

  • Obtain access to mapping media – usually requires an unlock code. This can cost $100-250 depending upon the vendor.
  • Load maps onto your PC from a DVD or CD-ROM or downloading online.
  • Crop the map index to fit the MB capacity of your SD card. Selecting regions is only possible in some software. OR
  • Connect your GPS device to your computer using a USB cable.
